When did the Women’s Euros start?

The Women’s European Championship began in 1984 and has since grown significantly in size and popularity. Initially played with just four teams, the tournament now hosts 16 nations. For the first three tournaments, the competition was called “European Competition for Representative Women’s Teams”, which is a much less catchy title. In 1990, the tournament was renamed and awarded European Championship status.

2025 marks the 14th edition of the competition, just three years since England lifted the trophy on home soil in 2022.

When is Women’s EURO 2025?

Who are the favourites?

England are the reigning champions of the competition, so the pressure is on to see if they can repeat their success. We’ll have to wait to see how they do, but how strong a chance do they have?

According to The Analyst, Spain is the current favourite to win the competition. This comes off their 2023 Women’s World Cup victory and UEFA Nations League title in 2024. Winning the tournament would make Spain the second women’s team in history to win consecutive World Cup and Euro tournaments. Unfortunately for Spain, they’ve only made it to the quarter-finals in the last 3 years and have never reached a final. Is 2025 going to be their year?

Not if The Lionesses have anything to say about it. The reigning champions are back to defend their title from 2022. Another win would make them the second team to win consecutive Women’s Euro titles. England aren’t the current favourites as they’re dealing with a few absences and injuries. However, the team has won each of their last 14 group stage games at major tournaments and is expected to claim the top spot in their group. The Lionesses could still pull out a win.

What about the others? Germany is the most successful team in the history of the tournament. They’ve won 8 titles and came close to another win in 2022. France has never reached a final in the Euros despite having played in 7 tournaments. They’re an outsider, but will France have what it takes to get further in 2025? Sweden were the winners of the first Euros back in 1984 and are another dark horse this year. They’ve made it to the final four in 9 of their last 11 appearances.

Which country has won the most Women’s EURO titles?

Germany is the most successful team in the history of the tournament. They’ve won the title 8 times and came close to a ninth in 2022. Their first win came in 1989 and then again in 1991. Although their most successful run came between 1995 and 2013, when they won 6 consecutive tournaments. So far, Germany is the only team to win the title two years in a row, but England will be hoping to match that feat this year.

List of Previous Winners

Thanks to Germany’s dominance over the years, only 5 teams have walked away with the title since it began. This list includes:

  • Germany (8 wins)

  • Norway (2 wins)

  • Sweden, Netherlands, England (1 win each)

Will another team make it into the Women’s EURO history this year, or will one of the previous winners walk away victorious again?

Official Match Ball

In December 2024, the official match ball for the tournament was unveiled. Adidas revealed the Konektic ball on X (Twitter) to the delight of fans. The striking design was inspired by the mountainous landscape of Switzerland, and each panel features a reference to prominent architectural landmarks in the eight host cities. For the first time, the Womens’ EURO ball features their Connected Ball Technology, which enables faster and more accurate officiating. The technology contributes to UEFA’s video assistant refereeing (VAR) decision-making process. It sends precise ball data to video match officials in real-time, which helps them make faster decisions.

England Broke Records

This will be a big tournament for the England team as they’ll be keen to repeat their victory in 2022. Not only did they walk away with the win on home soil, but they also walked away with a few impressive records. Thanks to their 8-0 victory against Norway, the team recorded the biggest margin of victory in Euros’ history. This win also contributed to their 14 group goals and their 22 goals overall. These two figures are both the highest recorded in the history of the competition. Finally, England lifted the trophy in front of a sold-out crowd of 87,192, a record-breaking attendance for a women’s international fixture in Europe and for any European Championship finals match.
