Football Cupcakes

Cupcakes are a really simple and easy way to get your kids into the kitchen. All you need is a basic recipe and some cupcake cases. Then your kids can let their creativity run wild and decorate them however they want.

baking ingredients

Basic Cupcake Recipe – Makes 12 cupcakes

For the cupcakes

  • 110g softened butter
  • 110g golden caster sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 110g self-raising flour

For the buttercream

  • 150g softened butter
  • 300g icing sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • food colouring of your choice (optional)

Baking supplies

  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and fill a 12 cupcake tray with cases.
  2. Using an electric whisk beat 110g softened butter and 110g golden caster sugar together until pale and fluffy.
  3. Whisk in 2 large eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl after each addition.
  4. Add ½ tsp vanilla extract, 110g self-raising flour and a pinch of salt and whisk until just combined.
  5. Spoon the mixture into the cupcake cases.
  6. Bake for 15 mins until golden brown and a skewer inserted into the middle of each cake comes out clean. Leave to cool completely on a wire rack.
  7. To make the buttercream, whisk 150g softened butter until super soft then add 300g icing sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
  8. Whisk together until smooth (start off slowly to avoid an icing sugar cloud) then beat in 3 tbsp milk.
  9. If wanting to colour, stir in the food colouring now.
  10. Decorate your cupcakes however you want.

Mix it up

The great thing about cupcakes is that you can adapt the recipe to add loads of different flavours. Add a bit of cocoa powder or melted chocolate for a chocolate hit. Or add the zest of a couple of lemons or oranges for a citrus twist. Cupcakes are versatile so just pick your favourite flavours and get mixing.

Icing bag

There are plenty of great ways that you can give cupcakes a football twist but if you need a few ideas why not try:

  • Decorating them in your team colours.
  • Decorating them to look like a football. (We suggest copying your favourite Pendle footballs)
  • We love these cupcakes which decorate an Oreo to look like a football.
  • Use fondant icing to cut out football shirts or make football scarves like these cupcakes.
  • Use white chocolate buttons and some black icing to create mini footballs to stick on top of green icing like these cupcakes.
  • Put all of your cupcakes together and make one big cupcake cake in the shape of your favourite Pendle football shirt.
